Environmental Lab Manager

Job Description:
 
Location: Batesburg-Leesville, SC   Reports to: Plant Manager
Department: Lab                               Status: Exempt              
 
Job Summary:
Manages hazardous waste and waste treatment operations including personnel training; labeling, manifesting, and arranging hauling; overseeing that required inspections are performed; and submitting forms or reports to regulating agencies as required by them.

Sets up laboratory equipment and instrumentation required for tests, research, process control, or wastewater analysis. Oversees Testing and analyzes products to determine strength, stability, purity, chemical content, and other characteristics.

Recommends and records adjustments to bath chemistry to assure that they are within prescribed operating parameters. Tests and analyzes wastewater to determine levels of local, state, and federal regulated pollutants. Prepares chemical solutions for use in processing materials by following standardized formulas or experimental procedures. Troubleshoots plating process problems to determine cause and corrective action.
 
Essential Functions:
  • Manages the daily operations of the on-site laboratory. Ensures all activities are in compliance with applicable regulations. Provides analytical services and technical support to site operations and monitoring projects as required.
  • Performs a variety of laboratory-based tasks aimed at helping customers improve their ability to solve their problems, lower their costs, reduce their liabilities and increase their efficiencies. Performance of these tasks also helps ensure continued company financial health.
  • Manages a variety of tests and analytical procedures and ensures the validity and accuracy of test results.
  • Manages the operation of the site laboratory and ensures all laboratory processes are performed safely and in a compliant manner at all times.
  • Ensures all laboratory processes are kept current with quality assurance and quality control requirements in accordance with site licenses and permits.
  • Ensures all laboratory documentation is transmitted to Document Control for retention purposes in a timely manner.
  • Manages laboratory operations in support of internal and external customer monitoring projects.
  • Ensures routine sample analyses and environmental sample collection activities have the support required to meet project schedules.
  • Develops and implements procedures for sampling, counting and analyses of sampling functions.
  • Ensures all data input in the laboratory database system is complete and accurate.
  • Manages staff selection, development and retention. Establishes and monitors work goals and objectives. Evaluates employees through performance reviews, ongoing coaching and feedback methods.
  • Provides direction and guidance to laboratory staff on all laboratory-related matters.
  • Ensures that the facility analytical laboratories are designed in a manner providing adequate capacity to analyze samples that monitor plant operations and qualify facility feed and product as compliant with the respective waste acceptance criteria.
  • Ensures that hazard controls are incorporated into the laboratory design as required by location.
  • Provides required laboratory support for test programs.
  • Ensures that laboratory resources are adequate to provide accurate and defensible data in support of
    facility Operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or related field with 5-10 years of relevant experience or equivalent.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Must be comfortable presenting in front of executive management.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with people at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy and statistical relevance.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Must be able to work on and prioritize multiple projects.
  • Must possess curiosity to understand all processes and procedures and be dedicated as well as service oriented.
  • One (1) to Three (3) years Supervisory/Leadership Experiences.
